An Unpopular Opinion on Literature

Posted on Updated on

I don’t like J. R. R. Tolkien’s writing. There, I said it. He spends too much time describing the insignificant items in a story. For example, I recall reading The Hobbit and Tolkien spent an egregious amount of time describing the grass. I tried reading The Lord of the Rings. I ran into the same problem. Usually writers would save so much description for an object or person that plays an important part in the story or a part of the story. Not with Tolkien though. So. Much. Unnecessary. Description.

Understand that he’s creating a whole world down to its chlorophyll. Middle Earth is NOT our world at the end of the day.
